It’s Monday and I’m up early in the morning to get my routine started. Freshen up a little so I’m partially clean, throw on my track suit and put my Air Max on my feet. The shades are covering my eyes from the sun and I am not “skipping a beat” as I hit the street. I run two miles as usual then do some calisthenics, you know, to keep the body right.
As I get closer to the pier I normally work-out around, through my shades I see an artist who has a collection of images of me. I say, “Excuse me sir, I see you out here every morning drawing and now I see you have a group of pictures you have drawn of me”. He says, “I draw what I see at the pier, the wild life, man… all sorts of things out here.” I clear my throat, “Sorry to be rude… my name is Will “MR.G”, and yours?”. “My name is Leonard Fletcher and I’m a devoted artist who would love to open an art museum one day”. Mr. Goodnite says, “Oh really! I find your artwork very interesting. Do you have a way I can contact you? Maybe we can do some business together”. Leonard says “No I don’t have a phone but I’m out here usually during the early morning hours practicing my craft. So for you to find me Will “MR.G” you have to come here”. I say… “Okay cool, until the next time we meet,I’m going to get going and finish my jog”. As I finish jogging, the thought of an art museum with this Leonard Fletcher’s artwork would be astonishing.
Back at the loft, I read the paper while I munch on some cereal and many thoughts of the day start running through my head. I start ironing my clothes so I can get to the office but for some reason today, I just don’t feel like driving. “Public transportation, here I come!” . As I’m riding the train, my headphones are banging some classic soul, that “Marvin Gaye” type soul music. I close my eyes and all I can think about is a vacation. I open my eyes look to my left I see a homeless man with three to four jackets on standing there singing. He reminded me of Eddie Kane from the Five Heartbeats! Homeboy starts doing a dance with a mean two step, a spin, and does a split! That did it for me! All I could do was laugh. I reach in my pocket to give him a buck just because he made my day. I enter my office and all I can smell is the fragrance of perfume. I look down and I see a note on the desk that says “Sorry to invade your privacy but I really want to see you again, sincerely yours…”. Seriously, a note on my desk? Who can it be from? “Oh well, time to get some work done.”
Later on that day, I was on my way to lunch with my dad and I ran into Leonard. He hands me a folder and says “This is my business plan for the museum, go over it, and I’ll be by the pier in the morning so we can discuss it further”. Leonard walks away just as smooth as the classic soul music, I was listening to on my way to work. It made me laugh.
So we’re at the restaurant and the “splitting image of me” aka. Dad, is sitting at the table with a smirk. He shouts, “My boy how you feeling?”. I cut my eyes his way, “I’m fine Pops, I’m just very interested in investing in this man I met today. The idea he has for this art museum has me so enthusiastic, I’m fascinated by it. His talent is amazing and it made me think since I’m closing on that building downtown very soon, why not turn it into an art museum?”. Dad looks at me and says, “Well does this guy even have a business plan?”. I respond “Yes, he handed it to me right before I met you but I haven’t had a chance to look over it yet. Honestly though, I am really impressed that he has a business plan already”. Dad leans back in his chair, “Well son, look over it and if its ok and you agree… well I don’t have to tell you much, but remember scared money don’t make money”. We both laughed! “But enough of that, lets eat.”
I finally make it home after dinner, pour me a glass of Grey Goose on the rocks and sit on my balcony to begin reading Leonard’s business plan. Let’s see where this will take me next…
