“The event will channel Newark’s musical & cultural history
with a jazz showcase and burlesque performance.”
GlocallyNewark.com & Hell’s Kitchen Lounge is unveiling The Downtowner Club, a new event celebrating Newark. The event opens Friday, July 30th at the 239 Collective’s Washington Street home. It honors the old Bamberger’s department store, a fixture of historic downtown Newark.
In the post-World War 2 years, Bamberger’s Flagship Department Store located at the corner of Market and Washington St, converted a portion of their retail space into event space. They turned the 10th floor into a restaurant called The Downtowner Club, which they used as party rental space and a private dinning hall.
All around the city, spaces like it were evolving into cultural centers of postwar Newark: homes of blazing jazz, sexy bodies and the sense of unlimited possibility that defined an era.
More than a half-century later, the 239 Collective is bringing it all back. Join us as we welcome the jazz, the burlesque and the quintessentially Newark, across the street from the store where it all began.
